For many people who want to visit the west coast, you probably already know there are quite a few attractions in this area for not only yourself, but your entire family. With everyone available, it would take weeks to do everything. If you are on a budget, however, you probably want to figure out how to make the most of your time, keeping your pocketbook happy, as well as your family. One of the best ways to spend your vacation time in a way that will make everyone happy is spending your time at the Oregon Zoo.
The Oregon zoo itself is one of the largest zoos on the west coast and it inside the city of Portland, the largest city in the state. As well as being a rather large zoo, it is also the oldest zoo west of the Mississippi, opened originally in 1887, when a citizen donated his private collection of animals to the city after he could no longer care for all the animals. With the start of these animals, the Portland Zoo was opened (later becoming the Oregon zoo). Quickly, this zoo began to become popular and started expanding its collection of animals quickly to deal with the demands of its growing public.
In 1953, the zoo acquired one of its most famous attractions, Rosy the Asian elephant. Rosy became world famous in 1962, when she gave birth to Packy, the very first elephant born in the Western hemisphere in over 44 years. Today, Packy is still alive and as 2010, is still the tallest Asian elephant in the United States at 10.5 feet tall! With the start of Packy, the zoo became known as one the leading zoo in breeding elephants in the world. The newest elephant arrival at the park is Samundra, who is the first third generation captive born elephant in North America.
